Department Overview
The school buildings in Berkeley (historic and recent) are considered architectural showpieces. Several have won architectural design awards over the years. Most importantly, these school buildings have served generations of Berkeley children and provided a gathering place for many community members.
Two general obligation bonds – Measure A (1992) and Measure AA (2000) – provided the Berkeley Unified School District with a unique opportunity to carefully review its facilities needs and plan for the future. Staff presented to the Board nine separate comprehensive plans over the years that defined the major elements of the district’s massive construction efforts.
The Facilities Department oversees the facilities construction bond and all capital improvement projects. Providing oversight of bond expenditures is the School Construction Oversight Committee. The Committee members are appointed by the Board of Education.
In this web page you will find information about the department, the comprehensive Construction Plan, history about the buildings, information about the CCAC and its meetings, and Measure AA bond language.
