Berkeley Unified School District's Network for a Healthy California (Network) Garden and Cooking Program seeks to educate all students on the importance of eating fresh fruits and vegetables and getting physical activity every day.  Through hands-on garden and cooking-based nutrition education classes, students learn about where their food comes from and how to cook healthy meals.   Parents and students learn fun and easy ways to make healthy choices through annual school wide events such as Harvest Fairs, Farmersí Market booths, and parent cooking classes.  In collaboration with Nutrition Services, the Network program promotes a Harvest of the Month program, which features monthly seasonal recipes taught in the cooking classes and offered weekly on the school lunch menu.

NETWORK FOR A HEALTHY CALIFORNIA

The mission of the Network for a Healthy California (Network) is to create innovative partnerships that empower low-income Californians to increase fruit and vegetable consumption, physical activity and food security with the goal of preventing obesity and other diet-related chronic diseases.

The Network provides funding to schools with at least 50% of the students qualifying for free and reduced lunch.  Through the California Department of Public Health Cancer Control Branch, matching funds are provided to programs whose mission reflects the objectives of the Network.
