About the Department

As a result of E-Rate funding, all schools have a fully operational Ethernet local area network (LAN) that connects to the Internet. Computers are found in the vast majority of Berkeley classrooms and all school libraries.

Each school's LAN configuration consists of connecting every classroom by Cat-5 data cabling to the building's Intermediate Distribution Frame (IDF) via a fiber backbone. A fiber optic backbone connects outlying IDF locations to the Main Distribution Frame (MDF) that provide the interface to the District's wide area network (WAN) via T-1 and DS-3 connections.
