Berkeley Arts Magnet at Whitter - Facilities

Summary

Whitter Elementary (Berkeley Arts Magnet) School was constructed in 1939 and consists of one two-story buildling with basement storage and three portable buildings. The reconstructed bilding, designed by Chester Bowles Jr. Architechs, was opened in the fall of 1995. The main building is a reinforced concrete structure. In addition, there are still a number of temporary portables on the site. These portables were used during the seismic upgrade of the main building.

Construction Projects

Completed work includes the modernization/seismic upgrade of the main building, removal of some of the portables, grounds improvement and a few smaller projects. We plan to replace the boiler, replace floor coverings, paint the school, and remove no fewer than three portables.

Detailed Scope of Work

Completed Work

Projects comopleted to date include:

  • Structural retrofit of the main building including the installation of concrete shear walls
  • New foundations and improvements to the roof diaphragm
  • A revised interior to meet the educational needs of today
  • A new elevator, stage lift, curb cuts and other accessibility improvements
  • Hazardous material removal
  • A new roof on the main building and the District-owned portables
  • Painting the entire building
  • New flooring in the hallways
  • New or refinished wood floors in the auditorium and classrooms
  • New door hardware and new windows
  • A new electrical distribution system, new light fixtures and a new clock system
  • A new intercom/data system and a new fire alarm
  • An upgrade of the boiler and new piping
  • Improvement to the grounds and perimete fencing.
Most of the improvements listed were designed by Chester Bowles Jr. and Associates


Future Work

In the future, we plan to:

  • Remove the State-owned portables (3)
  • Replace the floor coverings
  • Paint the bulilding
