Candidates Statement from 2004 ballot:
As a college professor I have first-hand experience dealing with the challenges of educating our youth. I know what works in the classroom and how to get results. That’s why I have pushed for high standards, reliable assessments, quality professional development for teachers, and genuine accountability. Despite fiscal challenges due to reduced state funding and increased costs, we made significant progress during my last term: we adopted a fiscal recovery plan, balancing our budget without State intervention; improved student achievement with several schools gaining recognition; strengthened fiscal accountability; hired an outstanding high school principal who has brought stability and optimism; approved a small schools policy for BHS; and successfully defended our school integration program. During the next four years I want to lead our district as we develop and implement a strategic master plan to: further improve accountability; restructure BHS; and adopt new strategies to close the achievement gap while improving the academic performance of all students. I’m committed to ensuring that every student succeeds by providing quality education based on rigorous academic standards and high expectations in a safe environment. I have devoted my professional life to serving public education and will continue these efforts as your Board representative.
