Program Improvement

Our District receives Federal funding (called Title I) on the condition that we adhere to the state standards in identifying for each grade level what a child should know and be able to do in English-Language Arts and Mathematics. A state test is given each year to determine the percentage of students scoring at the “proficient’ or “advanced” level, and if each subgroup of students at each school are making Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP). Additionally, 95% of the students in each school must be tested. High school graduation rates are also a measure. The Federal Government, under the No-Child-Left-Behind legislation, has set the expectation that all students in our country will reach “proficient” by the year 2014. Until that time, there are required benchmarks that each school must meet for students and their subgroups.

Title I schools that do not achieve these benchmarks or their AYP for two successive years are called “Program Improvement.” Once a school is labeled PI (currently there are more than 1,700 in the State) parents may exercise their choice to leave the school.  The status of all California schools, including ours, is on the CDE Web site.
