PUBLIC NOTICE: WEST CAMPUS PLANNING UPDATE
Monday June 16, 2008  7:00PM - 8:00PM
Boy's Gym (located in parking lot)
When we met with community members on the 29th, it was clear that there was concern about the modular project proposed for the parking lot, and a great deal of support for reusing the existing brick classroom building, in a scaled down plan that would fit the budget. The Superintendent told the community that his understanding has been that the cost was prohibitive, and he committed to looking into the cost of rehabilitating the existing building, and reviewing any possible alternatives.

We had planned to report the community's comments at the May 29th meeting to the Board of Education on June 11; return to the community on June 16th with any changes or direction from the Board, and go back to the Board on June 25th for approval.

Since that meeting, Superintendent Huyett and Director of Facilities Lew Jones have been working with Baker Vilar (the design team) to ballpark the cost of rehabilitating the existing building, and the news is good. It looks like a project which focuses all resources to the rehabilitation of the building might be possible at a higher cost than the modular option. The additional cost is such that exploring the rehabilitation option in more detail is the current idea.

With this new development, the Superintendent has modified the schedule. The item has been pulled from the agenda for the June 11th Board meeting. The community meeting on June 16th (West Campus Boy's Gym 7PM-8:30PM) will be an opportunity to explain the Superintendent's recommendation at the board meeting on June 18th. That recommendation will be to have the Board review and approve the modular plan as one option and to gain approval to develop a rehabilitation option. The rehabilitation option will be presented to the Board at a future meeting, probably in August, and the Board would decide which option to pursue at that future meeting.

Community Construction Meeting
West Campus Construction
1222 University Avenue

This public meeting is intended to update the community about the District’s plans regarding the development of the Central Office facility on the West Campus property, for our staff currently located in unsafe buildings. The District has been exploring an interim alternative to the previously explored plan that was beyond budgetary constraints, and would like to present it to the community. The plan in the attachment went to the Board in January. The plan that we will see on May 29th will include rehabilitation of the building to the west of the cafeteria (meeting location) for Enrollment and Attendance and additional office space. There will be a second community meeting (date to be determined) so that any community input from the first meeting can be incorporated and brought back for review before the plan goes back to the Board of Education.
